As fraudulent deeds have become an increasing problem, the New York City Department of Finance has implemented a system under which property owners can ask to be notified whenever a deed, mortgage, or related document is filed affecting ownership of their properties. An owner may register for such notifications by completing the form online at http://bit.ly/ACRISNotice.  This program is available to owners of real property within New York City, including owners of condominium units (which are separate parcels of real property), but not cooperative units (which are legally regarded as personal property).  The City disclaims liability for any mistakes in the system or failures to give notice, so this program does not substitute for other steps that owners should take to safeguard themselves from identity theft or other forms of fraud, but signing up for it is another precaution worth taking.
